Travel Program

What Is Travel Basketball?

If you are new to Farmington's Travel Basketball program, here is a brief overview:

Registration
Registration typically opens early July.

Scholarships
Scholarships are available. Click HERE for more information.

Tryouts
Are held in September.

Length of Season
Practices typically start in mid-October with tournaments starting the first weekend in November and running through March.

Practices
We have two practices a week that will range in days and can include Wednesdays and Fridays.

The start times are the preference of the head coach. Most teams usually start at 6pm, 6:30pm, 7pm or 7:30pm. But all teams could have an occasional 8pm start.

Games
Teams play in weekend tournaments over the season. The final tournament will be the State Tournament in the metro.

3rd-4th: Play 7-8 weekends
5th: 8-9 weekends
6th: 8-9 weekends
7th: 9-10 weekends
8th: 9-10 weekends

Most of the tournaments our teams play in are fairly close - Our own Farmington tournaments, Apple Valley, Lakeville, Eagan, Shakopee, etc. Tournaments can be a mix of tow-day or one-day tournaments.

Team selection
We have teams at the "A," "B" and "C" level, depending on the number of players who try out in a given grade. Tryout evaluators place the players for the teams at each grade, and those are announced 1-2 days after the last tryout session.

Cuts
Teams are formed consisting of between 8-10 players per team. Expect there to be cuts as necessary.  Registration refunds are given to players who are cut.  FYBA refunds all fees except the $35.00 Administration Fee.  Players who withdraw after the set date will not receive a refund.

Family Volunteer Commitment: Each family is asked to fulfill (2) volunteer shifts regardless of number of registered players in a household, and provide a $400 volunteer check to be collected at tryouts.  Checks will ONLY be cashed at the end of season if volunteer shifts have not been completed.

* ONLY 1 check per household is required.

Official Volunteer Activities include:

  • Coaching (only 1 assistant per team)
  • Tiger Classic Tournament shifts

Not Eligible

  • Team Manager role
  • Keeping score for your child’s team games
  •  Helping at practice
  • Anything not approved by the board

Coaching
If a team does not have a coaching candidate who was interviewed by the coaching committee, we will encourage a parent on that team to coach. In some cases, a non-parent coach is available. But if not, and we do not have a coaching candidate among the parents, a team may not be formed after all, and the players will be refunded their registration.

Uniform
The only other out of pocket cost is for the uniform.  The required items are as follows:

  • Jersey
  • Shorts
  • Practice Jersey

* *Jersey numbers – players who played in the program last season will have their same jersey number, those who did not play last season will have their jersey number auto assigned. We do not take jersey number requests.

Girls 5th grade and up and boys 5th and 6th grade use a 28.5 ball.
